THE DJS
LOEFAH [UK / Swamp81]
Loefah is one of the pioneering founders of dubstep, releasing on one of the labels involved in the genre's genesis DMZ. Loefah started off collaborating with the Digital Mystikz on the DMZ nights run in Brixton and was part of Mary Anne Hobbs' Dubstep Warz radio show that contributed to breaking the genre to the mainstream. He was known for having a dark and minimal style that used powerful basslines and menacing vocal samples in order to create a sense of dread... Around 2007, after falling out of love with the genre, he moved onto UK Bass music and founded the record label Swamp 81 that has released bass music releases such as Addison Groove's Footcrab. His label holds a regular show on Rinse FM -- via Wikipedia / Loefah on the web:facebook.com/loefahofficial
WHEEZ-IE [DET / Southern Belle]
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Wheez-ie is 27-year old asthmatic DJ and Producer Matt Mauldin. While being known as “Your favorite Dj’s favorite Dj,” Wheez-ie always explores uncharted territory. With releases on Fools Gold, Trouble & Bass, Well Rounded, Embassy, Freshmore, Frite Nite, and Basshead Music, he is constantly in demand. Wheez-ie has been featured on websites and in magazines such as Xlr8r, Resident Advisor, Dj Mag, Dj Mag Korea, Thump, Do Androids Dance, Fact Mag and Mixmag. While annihilating dance floors is his favorite pastime, Wheez-ie really enjoys long slow walks on the beach and the faint scent of lilacs in the distance. In 2014 Wheez-ie’s label Southern Belle Recordings premiered with Dj Rashad’s “We On 1.” Rashad’s release was featured on Pitchfork, The Fader, The Wire, Resident Advisor, Mixmag, and many others facebook.com/djwheezie

KEEP THE FIRE LIT / LOST TRIBES OF TEXAS - Fox Redsky [Texas] - Trailer

The film exposes a glimpse of the cultural history of Texas six hundred years after the the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Descendents of these tribes share the stories of their people, passed down to them over the ages. Members of a few remaining tribes share their oral histories and practice spiritual ceremonies inherited from their ancestors. Through stories and ceremony, Keep the Fire Lit provides a window into the hearts and minds of indigenous Texans. The film dives deep into this fascinating segment of Texas society. Personal interviews highlight the social, political, and environmental implications of the re-emergence of indigenous identities. The filmmakers have visited holy sites all over Texas and held interviews in native communities; including with civil rights lawyers, cultural artisans, tribal spiritual leaders, peyote road men, traditional dancers, and environmental activists.

NNEKA THE UBER DRIVER - Funmi + Nikki Ease [ATX] - Web Series Trailer

And so have her twin siblings. As she comes to terms with not being the "perfect" Nigerian-American, she is forced to look for what her true purpose in life may be. Nneka is on a  journey of discovering her truth and is taking steps towards loving herself. Part of her growth is learning that she has to follow her heart and let go of trying to appease others. Early screening!

AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE - Iliana Sosa + Chelsea Hernandez [ATX] - Doc Short

In Austin, Texas, two expectant mothers—one undocumented and one US citizen—must contend with increased ICE raids and mounting hostility towards immigrants under President Trump | Their 100 Days is a partnership between Firelight Media and Field of Vision that aims to tell stories from the perspective of vulnerable communities. New episodes are from filmmakers of color.

THEMES & VARIATIONS - Yuliya Lanina [ATX] - Short Animation

Theme and Variations is a stop motion animation that features music by Olivier Messiaean performed by violinist Tatiana Berman and pianist Irina Botan. Painted images of anthropomorphic creatures are set in motion against a lush background of cloudy skies and green pastures, their movement hewing closely to the music. Unlike the composer who uses the variations form to reveal "a world in a grain of sand", Lanina plays it in reverse -- by zooming out. The fabled inhabitants of the multifarious realm are then shown to be fragments of one consciousness, that of a Cupid-eagle longing for a Psyche-butterfly. It premiered live in Cincinnatti Memorial Hall and was performed in Lithuania by Johnny Gandelsman (violin) and Andrius Zlabys (piano).
